Originally a part of Casco, and then what became known as Falmouth, Westbrook was officially incorporated as its own town in 1814 as Stroudwater. In 1891, Stroudwater adopted its own city charter. Nestled on the banks of the Presumpscot River, it is named in honor of Colonel Thomas Westbrook, landowner and mill operator, and one of its early settlers. Today it is the center of Maine's wood pulp and paper industries. Its most famous resident was the crooner/bandleader Rudy Vallee.
