Originally a 17th century settlement, Scarborough was destroyed by Indian attacks and all but abandoned. Resettled again in 1702, by 1730 it was an economically prosperous town with cattle and timber exports.
Today Scarborough is a suburban town only minutes from Portland. It has a significant small business and commercial sector (about 30%) and is home to the large food retailer Hannaford Brothers and also the Maine Medical Research Center. Winslow Homer, the internationally renowned artist, painted many of his best known works here.
