Settled in 1768 and incorporated in 1795, Poland is home of Poland Springs, once known for the healing powers of its water. It is also home to the Maine State Building which was built to represent Maine at the Chicago World's Fair Columbia Exposition in 1893. It was then dismantled piece by piece and brought back and reconstructed in the state of Maine for the then huge amount of $30,000.
There are a number of traditions regarding how the town was named. One says it was named by an Indian Chief, another for the European country and another for an early hymn. The natural beauty and history of the spring area have been preserved, is surrounded by several lakes, and has been a resort area for over 200 years.
