Named after the town in Portugal, Lisbon is the third largest city/town in Androscoggin County. With a population of just under 10,000 people, it nevertheless is within a short radius of over 100,000 people. Originally settled in 1628, Lisbon was incorporated under the name of Thompsonborough in 1799. In 1802 its name was officially changed to Lisbon.
Although originally a town dominated by large cotton mills (Lisbon was once known as the most "Industrialized Town in Maine") its economy has turned more toward services and light industry and is now home of world-renowned companies such as Masonite, Bradco Chair, The Dingley Press, and Furniture Superstore.
Home of the Moxie Festival, which every July celebrates one of America's most unique soft drinks (which predates Coke) which was advertised by baseball legend Ted Williams for over twenty years, Lisbon is located on the Androscoggin River between the Bath/Brunswick area.
