Known statewide for its top notch education, wide open spaces, and dedicated parkland, Cape Elizabeth has been home to two very well known celebrities over the years, legendary film director John Ford and the winner of the first women's Olympic Marathon, Joan Benoit Samuelson, who graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School and has been honored with a life size bronze sculpture in front of the Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth.
The Town also harbors Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in the world. Portland Head Light is the subject of the most famous lighthouse painting in America (by Edward Hopper), which is part of the collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.
